During the press conference, a representative from Quảng Bình's Department of Tourism shared that on October 18th, within the framework of the 25th General Assembly of the UNWTO High-Level Council held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan), a Gala Night was hosted to announce the tourism villages awarded "Best Tourism Villages" for 2023. Vietnam's Tân Hóa tourism village was proudly among those honored.

Tân Hóa stands as Vietnam's sole village to be selected by UNWTO from a list of 260 participating villages across 60 countries in 2023. Once known primarily for its weather-resilient architecture, Tân Hóa has now transformed into one of the world's best tourism villages.
According to the press conference organizers, with the goal of gradually transforming Tân Hóa from a region once known as Quảng Bình's "flood basin" into a key tourism hub in northwestern Quảng Bình, Chua Me Đất Tourism Company (Oxalis) has, over many years, collaborated with the Tân Hóa communal authorities, Minh Hóa district, and Quảng Bình's Department of Tourism to build a robust, step-by-step development strategy for Tân Hóa. This strategy ranges from involving local residents in tourism activities to empowering them to own and manage the services they provide to visitors.

This strategy involved developing tourism products like exploring the Tú Làn cave system, off-road motorbike tours through the lim forests, and various other offerings to gradually diversify the services available to tourists.
Tân Hóa is being developed as a weather-resilient tourism village, offering diverse experiences for visitors, from cozy homestays and engaging farm work experiences to home-cooked meals with locals, souvenir shops, and various other unique services.
The village has also benefited from well-structured promotional efforts through both domestic and international media, highlighting Tú Làn and Tân Hóa. Furthermore, blockbuster films like “Kong: Skull Island”, “The Immortal”, and “Legend of Quán Tiên” have been filmed in Tân Hóa, boosting its global recognition.

A representative from Quảng Bình's Department of Tourism added that in late 2022, after an on-site assessment in Tân Hóa, representatives from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (now the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism) suggested Tân Hóa apply for UNWTO's “Best Tourism Villages” award.
Recognizing this as an excellent opportunity to promote Tân Hóa and the surrounding region, Quảng Bình's Department of Tourism and Oxalis collaborated with the People's Committee of Minh Hóa district and Tân Hóa commune to develop a tourism village model aligned with UNWTO standards for the award application.

Preparing the application and establishing criteria to meet UNWTO's requirements was a complex task. It demanded a deep understanding of environmental, labor, community, benefit-sharing, and many other benchmarks to develop operational models and procedures that align with UNWTO standards.
According to UNWTO's results announcement, 260 tourism villages from 60 countries worldwide participated in the "Best Tourism Villages" award in 2023. Vietnam submitted four villages from Quảng Bình, Sơn La, Lai Châu, and Hòa Bình provinces.
Among these, Quảng Bình province's Tân Hóa weather-resilient tourism village model was the only Vietnamese representative selected by UNWTO, alongside several other global villages, for this year's prestigious award.

Sharing the good news with reporters at the press conference, Mr. Hồ An Phong, Vice Chairman of the Quảng Bình Provincial People's Committee, stated that Tân Hóa receiving this prestigious award from a world-renowned tourism organization provides a strong foundation, enabling the village to confidently step onto the global stage and gradually become a key tourism center in northwestern Quảng Bình.
Looking ahead, Quảng Bình aims to gradually develop Tân Hóa tourism village into a model for weather-resilient tourism in Vietnam, setting an example for the entire Southeast Asian region. Beyond creating tourism products that adapt to weather conditions, this will also serve as an effective model for collaboration between businesses and the community, leveraging local advantages for sustainable development.
The UNWTO Best Tourism Villages Award: This is a global initiative designed to highlight villages where tourism preserves and promotes community-based and rural values, products, and lifestyles, while also driving innovation and sustainability. The initiative also recognizes the villages' contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through tourism.
Launched in 2021 as part of UNWTO's Tourism for Rural Development program, this initiative seeks to transform tourism into a driving force for rural growth and well-being. By 2022, over 70 villages from nearly 40 countries had been recognized by UNWTO as Best Tourism Villages. These villages exemplify rural tourism destinations that offer authentic and diverse experiences for visitors, while also creating opportunities and benefits for local residents and the environment.
